Adenine (formerly known as vitamin B4) is a purine that has many different functions in biochemistry. In cellular respiration, it acts in the form of energy-rich adenosine triphosphate (ATP), cofactors nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). It is also used as a component of DNA and RNA in the process of protein biosynthesis.
